Seals From local governments to universities, silversmiths were hired to supply official silver and make seals for important documents. The picture on the right shows one of the surviving record of a seal found in Marbletown, New York. The seal was designed with the town's motto "Be Just. To Trust" engraved around the edges.
As many may not notice the small drawings and art on the seal, we can examine that there are two deer engraved on the upper register of its shield. This symbolize the mountainous ranges around Marble town and the prosperity it have bring. Another interesting detail are the pictures of crops etched in its lower region. This ties in with the daily life of the people, which revolves around the fertile soil and agriculture. |
Stained Glass Window This is a picture of a window from 1656 that is found in present-day Albany, New York. The glass, which was painted lead, is decorated with the Van Rensselaer Coat of arm. The glass was originally given to Dutch Reformed Protestant Church of Beverwyck and was later installed at the head of the staircase in the Van Rensselaer Manor House when the church was demolished in 1805.
As a side note, the Van Rensselaer family was one of the first Dutch merchants that came to settle in the middle region. This closely ties in with the regions cultural as many of it is influenced by Dutchmen. Also, the stained glass, which originally belonged to a church, was a symbol of the freedom of religion. |
